Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
The axolotl is a salamander that lives in the waters of Xochimilco. It is named after the Aztec god Quetzacoatl’s brother, Xolotl. The axolotl is unusual as it is able to regenerate any part of its body. Unfortunately, populations of axolotl are in decline as Xochimilco’s waters are drained and polluted in response to the demands of urbanization of Mexico City.
