Pipa

Since the late 1970s, many areas of Mexico City have depended upon a system of trucks called pipas for their water delivery service. These large trucks with cylindrical tanks can carry between 10,000 and 40,000 liters of water at a time, and in many of the districts poorly-served by federal or state infrastructure, such as Iztapalapa and some of the other eastern delegations, these pipas can make multiple trips a day. Pipas receive water from outlets called grazas, many of which are supplied by the extractive process of mining groundwater.
